Product info

The Helikon-Tex Squall Hardshell Jacket Coyote is a lightweight, technical shell jacket that provides reliable protection against rain and wind, even in challenging conditions. Its three-layer TorrentStretch® membrane material, effective moisture management and carefully designed adjustment features make it a versatile choice for hiking, trekking and active outdoor use.

The Squall's waterproof rating of 30,000 mm and breathability of 30,000 g/m²/24h allow the jacket to be used in conditions where weather protection and comfort during physical activity are equally important. The Coyote color is particularly suitable for users who prefer earthy tones and tan-colored equipment.

Effective weather protection without unnecessary weight

The Squall's key feature is the TorrentStretch® 3L laminate developed by Helikon-Tex, in which three material layers form a single waterproof construction. The structure consists of a durable nylon outer fabric, a polyurethane membrane and an inner protective layer.

The 30,000 mm hydrostatic head rating indicates a high level of waterproof protection. In practice, this means effective protection even during heavy rainfall, when the properties of a conventional water-repellent outdoor jacket may no longer be sufficient.

The jacket's stitched seams are taped to prevent water penetration. The DWR treatment on the outer fabric helps raindrops run off the surface and reduces dirt accumulation. The treatment also slows down saturation of the outer fabric, helping maintain comfort in wet conditions.

Breathable membrane construction for active movement

A waterproof shell jacket must also be able to manage moisture generated inside the clothing. The TorrentStretch® membrane has a breathability rating of 30,000 g/m²/24h and a water vapor resistance value of RET 7. A low RET value indicates low resistance to moisture transfer through the material.

This is particularly useful during long ascents, brisk walking and movement while carrying heavy equipment. In addition to the membrane material, moisture management can be improved by opening the ventilation zippers located under the arms.

The separate ventilation openings allow excess heat to escape quickly without having to open the entire jacket. This makes it easy to adjust airflow according to physical activity and weather conditions.

Protective details and versatile adjustments

The Squall Hardshell Jacket features several practical solutions that allow the fit and protection to be adjusted according to the conditions.
  • Adjustable hood: Two-point adjustment allows the hood to be fitted around the head. The high collar provides additional protection against wind.
  • YKK® AquaGuard® zippers: Water-resistant zippers help reduce water penetration into the jacket.
  • Two-way front zipper: Allows the jacket to be opened from the bottom, for example to increase ventilation. The main zipper features a Prym snap button for additional security.
  • Hook-and-loop adjustable cuffs: The cuff circumference can be adjusted to accommodate gloves and other clothing.
Adjustable hem: The drawcord at the hem allows the jacket to be tightened to reduce the effects of wind and rain.

Pockets that remain accessible when carrying equipment

The shell jacket features two zippered chest pockets positioned higher than usual. This allows the pockets to remain accessible even when the hip belt of a backpack is fastened. The design makes it easier to handle a map, small accessories or other frequently needed equipment while moving.

An internal pocket provides additional storage space for a phone or documents. Hook-and-loop panels on both shoulders allow users to attach their own patches.

The Squall weighs only approximately 420 grams in size L, making it suitable for carrying as a backup shell jacket. It packs into its own hood and does not require a separate stuff sack.

One shell jacket for several seasons

The Squall has no insulating padding. Instead, its purpose is to provide a waterproof and windproof outer layer over other clothing. This makes the jacket versatile across different seasons.

In spring, summer and early autumn, the jacket can be worn with lightweight base layers. As temperatures drop, additional layers can be added underneath, such as the technical Helikon-Tex US LVL 1 base layer and the insulating Wolfhound Hoodie mid-layer.

When layering clothing, it is important to consider both the outdoor temperature and the level of physical activity. The shell jacket protects against external moisture and wind, but separate insulating layers are needed when remaining stationary in cold conditions. During intense physical activity, moisture can also accumulate inside a breathable membrane jacket, making ventilation adjustments important.

Who is the Helikon-Tex Squall Coyote suitable for?

The Coyote-colored Squall is a good choice for users looking for a technically capable and lightweight shell jacket for year-round outdoor activities. It is suitable for hikers, trekkers, hunters and reservists who operate in changing weather conditions.

The earthy Coyote color matches a wide range of outdoor and tactical equipment. In terms of technical features, this color version is identical to the other Squall Hardshell Jacket models.

Compared to a conventional water-repellent outdoor jacket, the Squall provides significantly higher waterproof protection and moisture management specifically designed for active use. It is a practical choice when a shell jacket is expected to provide protection during prolonged rainfall rather than just occasional showers.
