Product info
The Helikon-Tex Squall Hardshell Jacket Taiga Green is a waterproof shell jacket equipped with a three-layer TorrentStretch® membrane, designed for demanding outdoor activities and changing weather conditions. The Taiga Green jacket provides effective protection against rain and wind, while its breathable construction also makes it suitable for physically demanding activities. Lightweight and easy to pack, the Squall is a practical choice for hiking, trekking, hunting and year-round outdoor use.The jacket combines a waterproof rating of 30,000 mm, breathability of 30,000 g/m²/24h and versatile adjustment options. The result is a technical hardshell jacket that can be worn during summer rain showers or as the outer protective layer of a winter layering system.
Three-layer construction for demanding weather conditions
The Squall's TorrentStretch® 3L material consists of an outer fabric, waterproof membrane and inner protective layer laminated together. This construction provides effective weather protection without a separate mesh lining while keeping the jacket's weight relatively low.
The membrane's 30,000 mm hydrostatic head rating indicates a very high level of waterproof protection, sufficient even during prolonged heavy rainfall. Taped seams provide additional protection by preventing water from penetrating through stitched areas. The DWR treatment on the outer fabric helps water run off the material's surface and reduces fabric saturation.
The TorrentStretch® membrane has a water vapor resistance value of RET 7 and a breathability rating of 30,000 g/m²/24h. These properties help moisture generated by the body escape from inside the clothing, which is particularly important during prolonged physical activity.
Ventilation and fit adapt to movement
In addition to waterproof protection, the comfort of a shell jacket depends on how effectively excess heat can be regulated. The Squall features zippered ventilation openings under the arms, allowing airflow to be increased without fully opening the front of the jacket.
The two-way YKK® AquaGuard® main zipper provides additional adjustment options and makes the jacket easier to use while moving. The water-resistant AquaGuard® zippers help reduce rain penetration through the zippers. The main zipper also features a Prym snap button at the top.
The high collar protects the neck area from wind, while the two-point adjustable hood can be fitted to the user's head. Hook-and-loop adjustable cuffs and a drawcord at the hem allow the jacket to be tightened when conditions become windy or rainy.
Functional pocket design even when carrying a backpack
The Squall's two chest pockets are positioned higher than conventional lower pockets. This allows the pockets to remain accessible even when the hip belt of a backpack or rucksack is fastened. The pockets provide convenient access to items such as a map, gloves or other small equipment.
An additional internal pocket provides storage for a phone or documents. Hook-and-loop panels on the shoulders allow identification and fabric patches to be attached.
The Squall weighs approximately 420 grams in size L. The jacket can be packed into its own hood, eliminating the need for a separate stuff sack when carrying it in a backpack.
Shell jacket for year-round use
The Squall is designed as a protective outer layer, with clothing underneath adjusted according to temperature and activity level. In summer, the shell jacket can be worn over a lightweight base layer to provide protection against wind and rain.
In autumn and winter, a moisture-wicking base layer and an insulating mid-layer can be worn underneath. For example, the Helikon-Tex US LVL 1 base layer and Wolfhound Hoodie are suitable components of such a layering system.
The Squall has no separate thermal insulation, so it cannot replace a warm winter jacket on its own. Moisture condensation can also occur inside even a highly breathable membrane jacket during intense physical activity, making active use of the ventilation zippers important.
Who is the Squall Jacket suitable for?
The Helikon-Tex Squall in Taiga Green is suitable for hikers, trekkers, hunters and active outdoor enthusiasts who value high waterproof performance and good breathability in the same jacket.
The Taiga Green color is a natural choice for forest and outdoor environments. However, the jacket is equally suitable for everyday outdoor activities and travel, and the color variation does not affect its technical properties.
Compared to a traditional non-breathable rain jacket, the Squall offers more versatile options for managing moisture and heat. Its advantages are most noticeable during movement and in conditions where both weather protection and good wearing comfort are required.
