Product info
The Helikon-Tex Squall Hardshell Jacket is a technical waterproof and windproof shell jacket designed for demanding weather conditions and active outdoor use. Its three-layer TorrentStretch® membrane construction combines high waterproof performance, excellent breathability and a lightweight design. The Squall is suitable for year-round use, including hiking, trekking, hunting and other outdoor activities where weather conditions can change rapidly. The jacket has a waterproof rating of 30,000 mm and a breathability rating of 30,000 g/m²/24h. Underarm ventilation zippers, an adjustable hood and carefully designed details make it a practical choice for prolonged and physically demanding activities.
TorrentStretch® 3L membrane protects against rain and wind
The Squall Hardshell Jacket is built around Helikon-Tex's proprietary three-layer TorrentStretch® laminate. Its waterproof rating of 30,000 mm provides effective protection even during heavy and prolonged rainfall. The membrane construction prevents water from penetrating the fabric while allowing moisture vapor generated by the body to escape.
The fabric has a breathability rating of 30,000 g/m²/24h and a water vapor resistance (RET) value of 7. A low RET value indicates low resistance to moisture transfer, helping reduce moisture buildup inside the jacket during activities such as climbing steep terrain or carrying heavy equipment.
The three-layer construction combines the outer fabric, waterproof membrane and inner protective layer into a single laminate. This design is suitable for active use without a separate, loose-hanging mesh lining.
Adjustable ventilation and protective details
Even a highly breathable membrane cannot remove all the heat and moisture generated during intense physical activity. For this reason, the Squall features underarm ventilation zippers that allow airflow to be increased quickly, for example during fast-paced movement.
The jacket's other details are designed to improve functionality in changing conditions:
- YKK® AquaGuard® zippers: Water-resistant zippers provide additional protection against rain. The two-way main zipper makes ventilation and adjustment easier.
- Taped seams: Help prevent water from entering through stitched areas.
- Two-point adjustable hood: Allows the hood to be fitted around the head. The high collar protects the neck and lower face from wind.
- Adjustable cuffs: Hook-and-loop adjustments help limit wind and water entering through the sleeves.
- Adjustable hem: A drawcord improves the fit and reduces drafts from below.
- DWR treatment: A water-repellent finish reduces moisture absorption and dirt buildup on the outer fabric.
The Squall Hardshell Jacket features two high-positioned chest pockets that remain accessible even when wearing a backpack with a fastened hip belt. This is particularly useful on long hikes, as small items can be accessed without removing the backpack.
An additional internal pocket provides storage for items such as a phone or documents. Hook-and-loop panels on the shoulders allow patches to be attached.
Weighing approximately 420 grams, the jacket can be packed into its own hood. Its compact construction makes it a practical backup shell for a trekking backpack or daypack when there is a possibility of rain.
Year-round shell jacket for layering
The Helikon-Tex Squall is designed to be worn as the outer protective layer. In warmer weather, a lightweight moisture-wicking base layer is often sufficient underneath. In colder conditions, a technical base layer and an insulating mid-layer can be added.
For example, the Helikon-Tex US LVL 1 base layer and Wolfhound Hoodie mid-layer form a suitable layering system together with the shell jacket.
It is important to note that the Squall is primarily a weather-protective shell jacket, not an insulated winter jacket. It has no insulating padding, so comfort in cold weather depends on the clothing worn underneath and the level of physical activity.
Who is the Helikon-Tex Squall Hardshell Jacket suitable for?
The Squall is suitable for users who need a lightweight yet technically capable shell jacket for rainy, windy and changing conditions. It is particularly useful for hiking, mountain trekking, hunting and other active outdoor activities where effective moisture management is just as important as waterproof protection.
Compared to a traditional rain jacket, the Squall's main advantage is its breathable membrane construction and independently adjustable ventilation. However, moisture can still build up inside even a breathable shell jacket during intense physical activity, making ventilation and proper layering particularly important.
