These water rations were not originally developed as an ordinary outdoor product. Their background lies in Bundeswehr military and emergency equipment as well as maritime survival equipment, where drinking water needs to remain usable for long periods, withstand demanding storage conditions and be easy to ration.

Why is water packed in 100 ml rations?

In an emergency, the small portion size is intentional. One 100 ml pouch can be opened at a time while the remaining water rations stay sealed, making a limited water supply easier to distribute and ration without unnecessary waste.

The small pouches can also be distributed between different pieces of equipment. A few rations fit easily into a vehicle emergency kit, evacuation bag, boat or outdoor gear without taking up the space required by a conventional water bottle.

The pouches are also used in sets of five, with 5 × 100 ml providing a total emergency water supply of 500 ml for 24 hour period.

From the Bundeswehr to maritime survival:

The 100 ml emergency water pouches are particularly well known from the equipment of the German Armed Forces, the Bundeswehr. Rations of this type have been used in connection with EPa (Einmannpackung) field rations as well as separate military and survival equipment.

Their use extends beyond the military. Long-life water pouches are also used as emergency water supplies in maritime lifeboats and life rafts, where compact packaging, long shelf life and the ability to withstand demanding storage conditions are essential characteristics.

10-year shelf life for demanding conditions

German Drinking Water is designed for long-term storage. The manufacturer specifies a shelf life of 10 years, meaning the pouches do not need to be rotated as frequently as bottled water intended for normal everyday use.

The specified temperature range is –50 °C to +70 °C. The combination of long shelf life and a wide temperature range is particularly practical for vehicles, boats and pre-packed emergency equipment, where storage conditions can vary considerably.

The emergency drinking water is manufactured by Th. Geyer Ingredients GmbH & Co. KG in Höxter, Germany. Each pouch contains purified and chlorinated drinking water packed in a hermetically sealed 100 ml portion.

The product holds BG Verkehr Certificate No. 413.009 and is also intended for professional emergency and survival equipment applications.

Where is an emergency water ration useful in practice?

German Drinking Water works best alongside your primary water supply rather than as a replacement for it. At home, it provides a long-lasting reserve water solution; in a car or boat, the pouches can remain packed as part of the emergency equipment; and outdoors, a few pouches can provide a final reserve if a planned water resupply is not possible.

The 100 ml portion is intentionally a small emergency ration rather than a normal amount of drinking water. Its advantage is that a small supply of ready-to-drink water can be stored for years exactly where it may unexpectedly be needed.
