Forest Fundamentals Ranger Pace Counter / Trail Tally Beads are a traditional and reliable way to measure travelled distance without electronics. The pace beads system is used by hikers, bushcraft enthusiasts, and military personnel for distance estimation, navigation, and tracking movement in the field.

When GPS signals are lost, batteries run out, or conditions become challenging, the mechanical pace count system continues to work reliably. Each bead helps track travelled distance based on your pace count and makes it easier to estimate your location even in darkness or difficult terrain.

Trail Tally Beads operate on a simple principle: one bead equals 100 metres, while the upper beads represent full kilometres. When paired with a compass, the system provides a highly reliable way to maintain direction and estimate your location without electronic devices.

How to Use Ranger Beads / Pace Beads

First determine your personal pace count for 100 metres
Start counting your pace pairs while moving
Move one lower bead after every 100 metres travelled
Once all lower beads have been moved, slide one upper bead down = 1 kilometre
Upper beads help track longer distances
Combine with a compass for more accurate navigation
Excellent backup navigation tool when GPS is unavailable

The Pace Beads use durable 550 Survival Cord, featuring paraffin-waxed inner strands that can also be used as a fire-lighting aid. The set also includes a metal carabiner for quick attachment and a mechanical emergency whistle rated at approximately 100 dB.
